CNC Machinery Maintenance Failure

This relates to a machinery breakdown claim at a specialist engineering and injection moulding facility.

A claim arose during a planned maintenance procedure to a 5 axis CNC machine, the service engineer shut down the power causing the magnetic machining head to smash through the bed plate.

The machine was declared a write off by the manufacturers which left the factory unable to function without this critical machine.

Arrangements were made for two manufacturers of CNC machines to tender for a new replacement and installation. A machine was successfully purchased for £140,000 less than the Insured was quoted, it was ordered, manufactured and delivered to the UK from Germany. The unit was commissioned within 5 weeks of the claim saving a huge business interruption claim accruing and ensuring the client did not breach its contract with a prestigious UK car manufacturer.

A successful recovery was pursued from the Insurers of the maintenance engineer whose negligence caused the damage.
